On Friday, Feb. 2, fifteen students representing Grand Rapids, Greenway and Nashwauk-Keewatin High Schools, signed training agreements with local manufacturing businesses and prepared to begin their career pathway internship experience.

The IASC NEXT Career Pathways Manufacturing Internship is the capstone experience in the Manufacturing Career Pathway, and provides students the opportunity to work at local manufacturing sites for four days per week and attend a seminar class one day per week. Joe Gabardi, Manufacturing Pathway teacher at Nashwauk-Keewatin High School, coordinates the internship program and is the seminar instructor.

Students are placed with supervisors in area businesses to oversee their paid internships. The following businesses are serving as intern sites this semester: Hibbing Fabricators, L & M Radiator, Midwest Manufacturing & Mechanical, Northland Machine, Range Steel Fabricators, Swan Machine, Trison, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America, and Zakobe.

The IASC NEXT Career Pathways Manufacturing Internship is funded by grants from the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry Youth Skills Grant and Greater Twin Cities United Way Purpose DrivenPaycheck Grant. These dollars go to support the costs of coordination, recruitment activities, and support staff.

Manufacturing internships are an important part of building a strong manufacturing workforce for the future. Thanks to all participating businesses, school staff and sponsors who have committed to providing this valuable step for students in the manufacturing career pathway.
